“They shot 3-year-old Luis Diaz in the back while he was strapped in his car seat. No sentence imposed will ever make up for what this family has lost.”

On September 28, 2023, around 2 p.m., an argument ensued between Katherine Treadway and the male victim, 31, outside of their duplex residence located near West 66th Street and Denison Avenue in Cleveland. After the argument, Katherine Treadway called her boyfriend Juan Davis several times and moved her vehicle out of the driveway. A few minutes later, Juan Davis drove to a nearby street and Devonte Parker and Jayden Sorensen, now 18 (16 at the time of the incident), exited the vehicle. Parker, holding a handgun, and Sorensen, holding a rifle, ran towards the rear of a nearby residence and fired multiple shots across the street towards the victims’ vehicle. Parker and Sorensen ran back to Davis’s vehicle where Davis was waiting with the car still running. All three individuals then fled the scene.
The 31-year-old victim was standing outside the vehicle parked in the driveway of the duplex residence. Inside the vehicle, the 22-year-old victim sat in the front seat. Two children, 3-year-old Luis Diaz and an 11-month-old child, were also inside the vehicle in car seats in the back seat. At least five gunshots struck the vehicle, including one bullet that traveled through Luis Diaz’s car seat, hitting him in the back. Additionally, the 31-year-old victim was shot in the foot. Cleveland Division of Police (CDP) and Cleveland Emergency Services responded to the scene. Both the 31-year-old victim and Luis Diaz were transferred to a nearby hospital. Luis Diaz was pronounced deceased. The 31-year-old victim was treated for his injuries.
In addition, Juan Davis was charged in a previous unrelated criminal case in which Katherine Treadway was the listed victim. The 22-year-old victim in this case was a listed witness in the previous criminal case in which Juan Davis was charged.
